The oil palm mills generate many by-products and wastes that may have a significant impact on the environment if they are not properly dealt with. This includes

The extraction and purification processes generate a voluminous liquid waste generally known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME).

Palm Oil Mill Effluent is comprised of these three categories:

• 95 -96% Wastewater with BOD (25,000- 65,000 mg/l) and COD (40,000- 100,000 mg/l)
• 2-4% Suspended & total solid impurities (mostly organic)
• 0.5- 1.5% Palm Sludge Oil (PSO)
